Geoff Mull is a talented singer-songwriter hailing from Gateshead. We had the opportunity to chat with him, and we are thrilled to bring you the details about one of the North East’s top musical singer songwriters.

Geoff has had a passion for music since he was a child. He grew up with a diverse range of music from his parents, including U2, David Grey, Tracy Chapman, Candi Staton, and ABBA. As a young boy, he was part of a pop group called 2-2-Many, which was his first foray into the music industry. Later, he went on to the X Factor TV show in 2013, but it wasn’t until 2014 that he gained significant publicity after reaching the chair challenge round. He was the last performer to lose the chair and used this platform to build his career upon.

Geoff signed with ISG about seven or eight years ago and they have been a supportive force in his career, helping him to nurture his creativity and ambition. His most memorable gigs to date include the Newcastle 02 Academy, Newcastle City Hall, The Sands Centre in Carlisle, the Sunderland Airshow, and The Fed in Gateshead, which is particularly special to him because this is where he dedicated a performance of a song to his cousin who sadly passed away 22 years ago. This performance led to a collaboration with Josh Goodwill, who asked him to do the vocals on his remix of the classic dance anthem Toca’s Miracle, the song to date has amassed half a million listens and can be found on Spotify.

Geoff has been performing with his band for the past seven years, and his current lineup includes Mark Pattinson on guitar, Ellis Anderson on drums, and Mark Littlemore on keys and as the producer. Fans can expect exciting music releases from him in 2023, including his latest single “Meant to Be” which was released on January 20th, with fantastic music video accompanying the track featuring an intense contemporary dance performance with Geoff himself. His next single, “Unexpected,” is actually expected to be released in March or April 2023.

Geoff says his creative process is straightforward. He writes the lyrics and melody and creates a demo version on guitar and drum machines, and then his producer Mark helps to bring the songs to life – the whole band are simply great to work with.

He likes to write catchy hooks, and often begins with the chorus before moving onto the verse. The themes of his songs are inspired by real-life experiences that his fans can relate to.

Geoff has an interesting approach to songwriting, which he likens to boxing. He explains that starting slow is like the warm-up round, with the intro and verse being the jab, moving into the pre-chorus, throwing a few more punches, and then building up to the chorus, which is the burst of punches. He finds the similarities between the two help him to write and perform better.

Geoff juggles his personal and professional life with the help of a diary, and he finds routine is key for him. As a single dad, he sees his son 2-3 times a week, and although he comments that it’s tough, he says he always finds a way to balance everything.

We asked Geoff what it means for him to be performing live in the Metro Centre?

“This is massive, it’s somewhere I’ve been going since I was a kid, even from times when Metroland was still around. I’ve seen singers perform there and always dreamt of playing on that stage. Cliche I know but it’s a massive opportunity, and I’d like to thank Steven Mason and HMV Live & Local Tour for this fantastic opportunity.”
