The Low Lights Tavern is a quintessential, centuries-old pub that has been a cherished establishment, providing beer to both Fish Quay locals and tourists for well over four centuries.

As the reputed oldest drinking establishment in North Shields, it has had its share of moments in the spotlight, primarily because it boasts a connection to hometown hero Sam Fender, who initially toiled behind the bar and remains a frequent patron to this day.

However, another rising star in the shape of author Betsy Baskerville (aka Faye Allman), has taken ownership of the famous venue herself by featuring The Low Lights heavily in one of her series of crime novels.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne and now residing in North Shields, Allman started putting pen to paper just before lockdown. A taekwondo coach and self-confessed UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) addict – she decided to combine her two passions in her very first crime fiction novel – The Only Weapon in the Room – in that the lead character, Athena Fox, is a martial arts fanatic whose local happens to be The Low Lights Tavern in North Shields. She has since written 7 novels in the same genre, all set around the Northeast of England.

“I got addicted to crime fiction a few years ago and decided that I wanted to have a go at writing my own novel. I couldn’t set a story in North Shields and not feature my favourite local The Low Lights!”

Says Faye

“One of our customers happens to be a huge Betsy Baskerville fan, and mentioned that The Low Lights was featured in one of B. Baskerville’s novels so of course we went straight out and bought a copy!
It’s a cracking read, and we’re thrilled to be the main character’s pub of choice … though not so sure we’re happy that she trashes the ladies facilities in one scene!!”

Says Low Lights Manager Lynsey Guthrie
