LOCAL boxing gyms across the area have welcomed Royal Navy boxers through the doors, to lead training sessions with young boxers.
Last week Youth boxers from Sunderland East End Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) and Newcastle Fighter Gym were joined by six representatives of the Royal Navy Boxing Squad for challenging training, including technique lessons and pad work.
‘Project Chrysalis’ is an initiative between the Royal Navy and local councils to provide youngsters the opportunity to gain insight into the Service whilst also gaining some rewarding boxing lessons.
The Sailors and Marines shared their experiences of serving, dispelling myths around the application process, basic and specialist training, service life and sporting opportunities available while serving. Able Seaman (AB) Bryony Vass, who has been boxing for several years in the RN said:
‘Project Chrysalis is about telling our stories and letting people know that the Royal Navy and Marines has space for all. Also, the reality is that the job isn’t just about some scary war!’
Captain Jim Wright, Royal Marines, who heads up Project Chrysalis said:
‘There’s a flip side to the work. It gives the boxers confidence to speak publicly, share their backgrounds and really demonstrate diversity through upbringing, education and the journey they have been on.’ He added: ‘The boxers are wonderful to work with, noble, gracious, kind and fun.’
Project Chrysalis seeks to continue to bring more sports to more regions, all across the UK.
