LGBTQIA+ arts and youth charity, Curious Arts bring their Creative Youth Challenge to Newcastle’s Live Theatre this Summer. Inviting LGBTQIA+ young people to take part in two days filled with fun, free creative workshops.

The Creative Youth Challenge days will take place on Saturday 8th June and Saturday 22nd June with a variety of free, creative workshops for under 16’s and aged 16+ young people to explore art, music, performance and theatre. Participants will work with professional artists and creatives from across the North East to create and develop new performances which represent them and their experiences as young LGBTQIA+ people.

As a result of the workshops, the young people who take part will have the opportunity to share this new work with family and friends at the Live Theatre is Curious: Youth Showcase on 22nd June on Live Theatre’s main stage! Providing a platform for the ideas and voices of young creatives as they take to the stage for an evening of performances and presentations.

“We are very excited to be collaborating with Live Theatre for this event, championing young LGBTQIA+ people in Newcastle to feel seen, heard and supported. Providing much needed safer, inclusive environments for these young people, allowing them to meet peers, take part in new creative activities and be immersed in one of the countries leading new writing venues.”

Izaak Gledhill, Community & Youth Projects Producer at Curious Arts

Live Theatre is one of England’s only venues outside of London dedicated exclusively to new work, with a global reputation for its original, bold and deeply authentic productions rooted in the soil of the North East.

“Here at Live Theatre we are dedicated to developing and showcasing the creative voices of all young people in the North East, bringing their stories to a wider audience. We are thrilled to be collaborating with our partner Curious Arts on these theatrical events, platforming and celebrating LGBTQIA+ creativity and are looking forward to seeing their ideas come to life on our stage.”

JD Stewart, New Work Producer at Live Theatre

Curious Arts’ youth activity was developed in response to a challenging social and political climate for LGBTQIA+ communities, deepened by the pandemic. Their Creative Youth Challenge days create opportunities to learn new skills and improve young LGBTQIA+ people’s mental health by providing much needed community, friendship and access to creative outlets.

Curious Arts’ Creative Youth Challenge is for LGBTQIA+ and gender non-conforming 11-19 year olds (groups split into under 16’s and 16+), and will take place at Live Theatre on Saturday 8th June from 10am to 4pm and Saturday 22nd June from 12pm to 6pm.
