Pupils and Families Enjoy Reading Cafes for Macmillan Fundraiser

It was time for coffee, biscuits and a good read when a school in Kenton took part in this year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning fundraiser.

St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary held Reading Cafes across three consecutive mornings to raise more than £165 for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is one of the country’s largest charities.

More than 150 children from Years 1 to 6 took part in the event, where they were joined by family members and carers to enjoy a selection of age-appropriate books over tea, coffee, juice and biscuits.

The school far surpassed its goal of £50 to make an impressive £167.35 for the annual appeal, which took place for the first time in 1990 and has since raised more than £350 million for the charity.

Anne Bullerwell is Headteacher at the school, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.

“At St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, our annual Macmillan fundraising event is so important, because many of our lives have been touched in one way or another by cancer,” she said.

“Our Macmillan Reading Cafes help raise money for essential cancer services, increase awareness, bring communities together, and demonstrate our compassion and support for people affected by cancer.”
