Newcastle Pupils Mark VE Day with Wartime Costumes and Special Guest Memories

Children at a Newcastle school were joined by a very special guest when they celebrated the eightieth anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on Thursday 8 May.

St Catherine’s Catholic Primary welcomed Ann Gowens to a commemorative assembly, where she shared her memories of the first VE Day celebrations, which she had attended as a toddler in 1945.

In a whole-school event, the 82-year-old spoke about her wartime experiences, bringing the children’s studies of World War II vividly to life.

To further enhance the experience, pupils of all ages arrived at the schoolgates in the morning dressed as evacuees, land girls, or soldiers, or wearing patriotic red, white, and blue.

There were also VE Day-themed activities throughout the day, including an Early Years victory tea party, the opportunity to examine wartime artefacts, and the creation of celebratory artwork to mark the historic occasion.

“We had a wonderful day celebrating VE Day, from Nursery through to Year 6,” said Fiona Craggs, who is Nursery Teacher and Early Years Lead at St Catherine’s.

Other BBCET members holding VE Day events included St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, and St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School.
