A young business woman and Newcastle University graduate has been presented with an award by Prince Andrew.

Shantelle Million received her Young Entrepreneurs’ Award from the Duke of York in a recent ceremony at Huddersfield University.

Shantelle’s company, MiCarePlan, provides electronic systems for the care sector, making it easier for staff to keep track of residents’ information.

The Newcastle University Graduate had the idea to set up her firm when she was working as a care assistant looking after people with dementia.

All in all, 16 graduates and students received a Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award at the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prince Andrew said, “All of you will have faced challenges and come up with similar problems that needed solving.”

“Universities are good places to be able to solve those problems. Now the challenge is to gain access to the networks that could aid the development of your business.”

Prince Andrew has long been keen on promoting entrepreneurship, especially in the tech sector.

The Prince said, “The next generation will need to be creative, have digital skills and a sound basis of understanding in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, at the very least.”

“They will need to think about being the very best in science, engineering and technology, and think around these areas as the very best opportunities for their future.”

The Duke of York’s website states, “Technology continues to change the way businesses work, making them more efficient, requiring fewer employees. Growth in job opportunities is therefore most likely to come from building a more entrepreneurial economy.”

“HRH (The Duke of York) seeks to raise and support the profile of start-up businesses, amplify the excellent work being done to support early-stage entrepreneurship, and act as an accelerant for entrepreneurs and new businesses.”
