
24.09.25 – Ian Barclay, CEO of Newcastle-based insurance broker Lycetts, has conquered Spain’s toughest one-day cycling challenge, raising an impressive £12,641 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
Taking on the legendary Quebrantahuesos – a 200km (124-mile) route through the Aragonese and French Pyrenees with over 3,500 metres of climbing – Ian finished the punishing course in 8 hours and 41 minutes.
Along the way, he faced searing 37°C heat, two punctures – including a 4km walk Motor Neurone Diseaseto get the second one repaired – but remained determined to finish.
His fundraising efforts were boosted by match funding from Lycetts’ parent company, the Benefact Group, which pledged to match donations up to £5,000. The final total raised reflects a huge groundswell of support from colleagues, friends and supporters.
Speaking after the challenge, Ian said:
“This was, without question, one of the toughest tests I’ve ever faced – both physically and mentally. But whenever it got difficult, I reminded myself why I was doing it.
“I’m humbled by the generosity of everyone who donated and I’m proud that this money will support the vital work of the MND Association.”
