Newcastle Catholic Primary Schools Step Back in Time for Charles Dickens Celebration Day

There were ‘great expectations’ when children from two Newcastle schools came together to celebrate one of Britain’s most famous writers.

Pupils at St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary in North Kenton joined with their peers at St George’s Catholic Primary for Charles Dickens Celebration Day.

Anne Bullerwell is Executive Headteacher across the two schools, which are both members of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.

“Pupils from St Cuthbert’s and St George’s stepped back in time to celebrate the life and works of one of Britain’s greatest authors,” she explained.

“The exciting event brought together all of the children from Years 1 to 6 who immersed themselves in a range of activities inspired by Dickens’s famous novels and Victorian England.

“Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of reading, writing, and drama activities, helping to bring history and literature to life in a memorable and engaging way.”

The celebration also enabled the pupils to develop their confidence, teamwork and communication skills through exploring the author’s work – as well as providing the opportunity to dress for the occasion in suitable style.

Mrs Bullerwell continued:

“Events such as our Charles Dickens Celebration Day are invaluable in helping children develop a love of reading while deepening their understanding of history and culture.

“By bringing literature to life through creative experiences, we inspire curiosity, imagination, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. It is wonderful to see children so engaged and excited as they make meaningful connections across different areas of the curriculum.”

She added:

“Through drama, discussion, creative writing, and practical activities, pupils gained a deeper appreciation of one of England’s most influential writers.

“Both schools are committed to providing enriching experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom, enabling children to flourish academically, socially, and spiritually.

“The success of Charles Dickens Celebration Day demonstrates how memorable curriculum experiences can inspire a life-long love of learning.”
