Tranquil moments of prayer will give way to joyous celebrations as Newcastle Cathedral plays host to an extraordinary musical gathering, a SILENT DISCO like no other.

Hundreds of revellers will be taking their own vow of silence when Awesome Silent Discos brings its unique ‘sound’ to town on Saturday 24 February 2024.

Instead of hearing hymns, party-goers will have their own headsets tuned in to one of three music channels as they ‘rave in the nave’ of the iconic building.

Pre-sale tickets will be available on Friday 3 November, and general sale tickets the following Friday (November 10), here: https://www.awesomesilentdiscos.co.uk/

With specific sessions for adults – and families – the North Shields-based business, which is responsible for the sell-out Silent Discos on the Beach events in Tynemouth – is making sure there is something for everyone.

“We just want to bring joy to people and what better way is there to do this than by giving people of all ages the chance to let their hair down and get their groove on in one of the North East’s most beautiful buildings?

“For us, having a silent disco in the Cathedral is a dream come true. When we started the business just before Covid-19 hit, hosting an event there was something which seemed impossible, and now we are here – we just can’t believe it is happening.

“There is always such an incredible, fun-filled atmosphere at our events, like our Silent Disco at the Beach, which has become a staple on the coast, but we think that inside the Cathedral this will be hitting new heights.

“This will be like nothing we have ever done – and like nothing people will have ever experienced – and we can’t wait to see everyone throwing shapes in this incredible location.

“Tickets to our events always sell-out fast so make sure you get yours ASAP. We can’t wait to see you, and your dance moves, there!”

Britta Koerber, director at Awesome Silent Discos

Each session will see three talented DJs battling it out to tempt revellers into tuning into their channel.

The two adults sessions take place between 6.30pm and 9pm, and 9.30pm and midnight, and will feature channels of 80s, 90s and 2000s music.

The family session, which welcomes everyone – including under 18s – takes place from 1pm-3pm and will be a mix of 90s and 00s classics, modern bangers and kids’ party classics.

All party-goers will get to strut their funky stuff in an incredibly illuminated interior, as well as enjoy a stocked bar and festival face-painters.

The building known today as Newcastle Cathedral has been at the pulsing heart of Newcastle for more than 900 years. Its iconic Lantern Tower has graced the skyline since 1448.

Originally St Nicholas’ Church, it was granted Cathedral status in 1882, coinciding with Newcastle’s designation as a city. The most northerly Church of England Cathedral, it serves as the mother church of Newcastle Diocese and the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle.

In April 2023, the Cathedral successfully concluded a major five-year redevelopment project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This transformation has made the Cathedral a more accessible and versatile space.

This one-of-a-kind silent disco will make up part of an exciting, vibrant programme of concerts, music, exhibitions and activities that take place at the Cathedral throughout the year.

The building remains a place of daily worship, hosting more than 20 services each week. The income generated from events such as this plays a vital role in sustaining the Cathedral for the entire community and supporting its charitable work.
