Young voices filled Newcastle Cathedral as children from a Byker school joined others from across the city for a special musical event.
Seventeen pupils from Years 4 and 5 at St Lawrence’s Catholic Primary took part in the Winter Choirs Celebration, a showcase organised by Newcastle Music Service.
“We were invited to take part, along with five other schools, because we subscribe to the Music Service,” said Charlotte Robson, Headteacher at St Lawrence’s, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.
Led by Music Lead and Year 4 Teacher Megan Wilson, St Lawrence’s Choir included children with special educational needs, and some for whom English was an additional language.
Their performance featured the hymns ‘Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow?’ and ‘This is Amazing Grace’, along with traditional pieces ‘Bella Mama’ and ‘Tongo’.

“The choir performed the traditional songs a capella, in a different language, and used sign language,” continued Mrs Robson.
“We even had two very brave soloists.
“The Winter Choirs Celebration was a sold-out event, with parents and carers from all six schools making up the audience.”
The other participating primary schools included fellow BBCET member Sacred Heart, as well as Chillingham Road, Benton Park, Dinnington First, and St John’s.
“It is important for our pupils to be able to perform outside of the classroom,” added Mrs Robson.
“Giving these pupils the opportunity to shine in an event like this is very important to us.
“Also, it helps improve their love of music, by listening to five different choirs, all of different sizes, with different aged children, all performing different songs.”
