Bellway has given beebombs and bug hotels to two primary schools in Newcastle to help provide opportunities to learn about protecting wildlife habitats.

The housebuilder, which is building new homes at Westburn in Westerhope, made the donation to Cheviot Primary School and Farne Primary School, which are both just over a mile from the development.

Each school received 10 beebombs – wildflower seedballs which include thousands of seeds from native wildflower species and can be scattered onto open ground. Each beebomb covers an area of approximately two square metres and creates a thriving wildflower habitat which helps increase nectar and pollen sources for pollinators.

Bellway also gave both schools a bug hotel, which provides nesting opportunities for creatures which would typically seek out holes in wood, hollow plant stems or other pre-existing tunnels, such as solitary bees, ladybirds, woodlice and spiders.

“Cheviot and Farne Primary Schools welcome the environmental packs kindly donated by Bellway. The donation of beebombs and bug hotels will help pupils to understand the importance of biodiversity with local wildlife and how we can promote and live in harmony with the wildlife in our locality.”

Lee Gallon, Executive Headteacher of both school

“Biodiversity is one of our key priorities as a business and we are focused on improving wildlife habitats as part of the developments we build.

“We are therefore happy to work alongside Cheviot and Farne primary schools and give them the means to promote wildflower growth and provide habitats for bees and other creatures.

“We also include bee bombs in our welcome packs to new residents when they move into their new homes, to encourage wildlife habitats to thrive throughout the development – making it a great place to live for both people and creatures.”
