BBC Match of the Day Highlights Benfield School’s Partnership with Newcastle United Foundation

On 14th January, Benfield School proudly welcomed the BBC Match of the Day cameras and Newcastle United first-team player Lloyd Kelly for an exciting feature on the Newcastle United Foundation’s new transition programme.

The segment aired on Match of the Day on 18th January, highlighting the innovative efforts to support young people during a pivotal stage of their educational journey.

The programme, funded by the Newcastle United Foundation and the Premier League, is designed to help young people transition seamlessly into secondary school and prepare for life beyond it. By providing targeted support, mentoring and guidance, the initiative encourages confidence and resilience, enabling pupils to unlock their full potential.

Anthony Martin, Headteacher at Benfield School, shared his thoughts on the visit:

“It was a real pleasure to welcome both the Match of the Day cameras and Lloyd Kelly from Newcastle United’s first team to Benfield School. Our visitors witnessed firsthand the amazing work our full-time Newcastle United Foundation staff do on a daily basis with some of our pupils. The transition programme they run helps ensure that our pupils are well prepared and supported as they move from primary into secondary school.”

He continued:

“The relationships they have developed in such a short period of time with both our pupils and their families is outstanding and is helping the pupils they work with to reach their full potential. It’s these partnerships that make Benfield School a truly special place, providing an environment where every child is supported to thrive.”

The event highlighted the strong partnership between the Newcastle United Foundation and Benfield School, a part of NEAT Academy Trust, which prioritises nurturing and transforming the lives of its pupils. With dedicated support from foundation staff like Connor Campbell and Andy Foster, the programme is empowering young people to approach their futures with confidence and resilience.

Connor Campbell, a representative from the Newcastle United Foundation, expressed his pride in the initiative:

“It’s inspiring to see how this programme is making a difference. Transitioning to secondary school can be a daunting time for young people, but through targeted support and positive relationships, we’re helping them overcome challenges and look ahead with excitement.”

The trust-wide commitment to partnership and innovation underscores NEAT’s values of collaboration and inclusion. By working with organisations like the Newcastle United Foundation, Benfield School is ensuring that pupils not only achieve academically but are also prepared for life beyond the classroom.

For families in Newcastle, this partnership exemplifies the kind of holistic support available at Benfield School – a school committed to preparing pupils for a bright and successful future.
